I think that's about right.

I think that's about right. The DS Lite launched around then in 2006. Plus, the DS Lite sales are starting to decrease- perfect time to release an upgrade! They will remake the Wii, and sell it around 2012, so be looking for that then! I've been following when they released their protables, and upgrades to those portables. Here the list:

Game Boy: 1989
Colored shell Game Boy: 1994
Game Boy Pocket: 1996
Game Boy Color: 1998
Game Boy Advance: 2001
Game Boy Advance Sp: 2003
Game Boy Micro: 2005
Nintendo DS: 2004
Nintendo DS Lite: 2006
Nintendo DSi: 2008/2009- I'm actually surprised it didn't launch in America when it did in Japan. All the previous years are BOTH America and Japan! Because the DS Lite was still selling so well over here, it delayed its launch until it cools off more- mid this year!

I think flash memory will

I think flash memory will replace Discs, Bluray and DVD. Retailers will minimize space by not having to store physical media and could sell movies on demand to generic flash media that could be reused many times by customers.
Also on demand by Cable and Satalite providers also is good and getting better and better.
I already have most of my old DVD and HD content on "Media Center" I really do not care how the content is delivered.

This is an October 2008

This is an October 2008 article, but by then we had Asus eee netbooks, the 1000H e.g., with 10-inch screens and 160 gig hard drives.

I don't see why 1024x600 is regarded as inadequate or barely adequate. One doesn't have to scroll left to right to see the typical Web page, and scrolling up and down is not a chore reserved for those with sub-optimal screen resolutions.

I agree with Phillipe; what evidence do you have to make this statement? I have both a PC and a 24" Imac 2.4ghz; I love my imac! over my PC. Apple rarely comment on their future plans so how would you be able to make a prediction like this

I have done away with the iMac as I was not impressed they discontinued the 17" one!

Not everyone wants a beast taking up their whole computer table, and in an age where everyone wants small laptops I think apple should look at either bringing a reasonably priced 17" multi touch iMac out - or bring out an 11"-12" macbook (nothing smaller than 11")

A First: Notebooks Outnumber Desktops
Global notebook shipments exceeded desktops for the first time during the third quarter, according to electronics market research firm iSuppli

Notebooks shipped worldwide between July and September amounted to 38.6 million, nearly 40 percent more than the same period last year, iSuppli said on its Web site Tuesday.

Shipments of desktops, on the other hand, dropped 1.3 percent year-on-year to reach 38.5 million units.

Both the BDA and the

Both the BDA and the Sony/Blu-ray haters out there are wrong. There was no freakin' way that any home video format would achieve 50% market share, from the 3.5% market share that you saw from HD-DVD and Blu-ray COMBINED at the start of the year. They would be projecting a percentage rate increase of +1,300%, which is ridiculous.

Concurrently, the latest issue of Home Media shows that Blu-ray's market share increased to 14% during the week that The Dark Knight came out, which is the best showing ever for the BD format. Just because a format does not meet inflated projections doesn't mean that it is a failure -- merely that the projection was wrong.

http://www.thehdroom.com/news/Blu-ray_Increases_Market_Share_vs_DVD/4030

The number that BOTH sides should be paying attention to is 2003 -- that was the year that the DVD's market share reached 50%. Yes, the DVD is the most rapidly adopted home entertainment format in history, yet it took the DVD format nearly SEVEN years before it finally conquered VHS.

By that standard, Blu-ray is already ahead of the DVD's adoption curve and by no means a market failure. But, it also says that Blu-ray still has a long road ahead before its market share even comes close to challenging the DVD for market supremacy. A lot of the negative comments being directed at Blu-ray right now seem like they got lifted verbatim from articles written about the DVD back in 1998 and 1999. People forget that it wasn't until about 2001 that the DVD's reign became inevitable, yet it took another two years for the DVD to actually achieve majority status.

Get Real: You said "notebook

Get Real: You said "notebook computers NEVER replace quality desktops."

I wish you could see the transformation that I have experienced in the past 15 years working in newsrooms. 10 years ago, practically everyone had desktops. Now practically everyone -- including graphic designers, paginators, and developers -- use laptops with docking stations. In my company, they are either Macbooks, MBPs, or ThinkPads.

The iMac will reach the end of its product lifecycle someday, just like the eMac, iBook, and Cube did before it. It's had a spectacular run, but it can't go on forever, especially in the current economic and pricing conditions.

I see three possible choices for Apple: Address the pricing issue, make plans to phase out the product line sooner rather than later, or eat the loss and hope things improve in 2010. My bet is on option #2 -- perhaps coupled with a new product release.
