Mozilla goes for a world record

The resourceful people over at Mozilla have come up with a rather unique publicity stunt to release the newest version of Firefox and get it on your computer. They’re calling it “Download Day” and challenging the world to make Firefox 3 the most-downloaded program in a 24-hour period.

A mini-site is taking future downloading pledges and promising that that when the goal is reached, users will have helped make an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. A world map is keeping track of what country is making the most pledges, with the United States in the lead, followed by Brazil. The total stands at just over is coming close to a quarter of a million, but no one is saying who, if anyone, holds the previous record.

Oddly, another major missing detail is the actual day of the event: Mozilla isn’t saying when exactly the final version of Firefox 3 will be released. But if you just can’t wait, pick up the release candidate over at Mozilla.com. Just remember to come back on download day and get the final version.
