So who won the Democratic contest in Texas 2 days ago? Lots of vague answers in political markets too. :)

Thanks, Bradley, your attitude is greatly appreciated. This type of a prediction market definitely opens up the possibilities of heated debate at times. Unlike a sports site, where a team either wins or doesn't, scores X points or doesn't, or a political market, where candidates win contests, etc., the products and events of the Internet economy have far fewer clear-cut triggers at times. We'll continue to try and be as transparent as possible. This may not be the last time we have a disagreement, but your contributions are definitely helping us improve through experience. Cheers.

I disagree with the

I disagree with the decision. What was finally announced matches very closely to what I thought was coming out, based on leaks and what I based my prediction upon.

But after all, all I lost was the S$200k, plus the S$100k I expected to win. I can probably make up that much on other events over the rest of this week, we have a bunch more events closing. And if not this week, next week or the week after.

Small harm, no foul.

"While the semantics could be debated" Indeed.

On a related note, one HUGE thank you for taking the time to explain the reasoning behind the decision. I've played on other sites where such a decision might just be handed down with no ability to discover WHY the moderators made the decision that they did. The fact that the Industry Standard IS willing to talk with the players to this extent is extremely positive in my opinion. Definitely significantly increases the odds that I will continue to play and will continue to enjoy playing.

I want to try and explain

I want to try and explain the reasoning behind this.

The 2D image maps are mapped to the "inner wall", so to speak, of a 3D sphere. So, rather than looking at a 3D object, you are "inside" the object, looking outward towards that inner skin. While all of the imagery is based on high-res 2D images, the underlying technology does indeed use a 3D engine.

So, rather than thinking of simply zooming into an out of a single image, you're really zooming into and out of images that have all been stitched together into a 3D environment of sorts, with breakthrough image mapping and projection, to create the environment without any distortion.

From Jonathan Fay's own words, WorldWide Telescope was based on his work from 3D terra-server visualizer engines. You aren't simply panning and zooming into one giant flat image.

I hope that helps. This was a tough one that, again, we knew would upset some people, but we had to go with what we believed to be the purest result with the data at hand.

It can't be judged until there's a good look at the application, drew. The app was announced on the 27th, but whether or not it counts as "3D technology" is going to require more than just an announcement.

Need but how do you know the date? If you have ever done a deal with Microsoft, you know they are "attornied up" and even on the day of expected signature of a deal, things change. To know the date, the deal nmust be already signed and their PR and your PR guys have fought it out over wording, positioning and who is going to release it and where. So to the predict a date the contract must already been signed and you are predicting 14.7 days of PR arguing. Since this predicition is leaning towards the predication that it is going to be announced on February 27.

Scoble has confirmed this was the World Wide Telescope.

Doesn't sound very 3D... and no more interactive than the average Google Maps etc.

The Worldwide Telescope will be interactive, but it won't be 3D. 3D doesn't make sense for displaying telescope data. It might take advantage of DirectX to render, but it won't "use 3D graphics".

Microsoft to reveal interactive 3D technology on Feb. 27

This prediction has been judged as having occurred after in-depth research and much internal debate. Robert Scoble's video shows researchers Curtis Wong and Jonathan Fay explain how they created an interactive high-speed 3D visualization engine that displays [2D] gigapixel images in 3D space. Further, they stitch the "tiles" together in 3D space using their invention - a brand new projection map that displays the data at the poles correctly by . While the semantics could be debated, the prediction required, "interactivity and 3D graphics technology". It did not say the visualization had to be 3D graphics (e.g. like a Pixar movie) but that 3D graphics "technology" would be utilized. Microsoft did indeed do this with Worldwide Telescope. We apologize for the delay.-- The Industry Standard

Robert Scoble nearly cried when he was shown a new Microsoft technology on the day before Valentine's Day. He won't say what it is. However, he did say who at Microsoft is involved -- Curtis Wong and Jonathan Fay from Microsoft Research. This Redmond division develops a range of new technologies, but for Scoble's tease, our money is on some sort of interactive technology that uses 3D graphics. The announcement will be made on February 27, according to Scoble. The criteria for this prediction coming true is the announcement must include interactivity and 3D graphics technology at its core. Note that the Standard has not been shown or told about this technology by Microsoft or its PR and marketing arms.
